Minecraft Netherrack Series 3 Mini-Figures: A Collector’s Guide

Before Minecraft collectibles spread into today’s many formats, Mattel’s small boxed mini-figures translated the game’s block-built cast into a compact blind-box line. The red, pixel-patterned Netherrack Series 3 box is an especially readable snapshot of that early era: the front carries a cube-shaped “3,” a large mystery silhouette, the phrase “Dig in!,” and an age grade of 6+. Inside is one miniature figure.

How to identify the Netherrack Series 3 box

The series name appears on a narrow side panel rather than dominating the front, which can make loose online descriptions inconsistent. For an unopened example, look for the burgundy-and-red netherrack-style pixel pattern, the white “3” in the top-left cube emblem, Steve artwork at lower right, and yellow Mini-Figure lettering. The legal panel identifies Mattel and Mojang, says “Contents: 1 Figure,” and carries a 2014 Mattel copyright notice. That dates the packaging design to Minecraft collecting’s mid-2010s period without requiring collectors to guess from a seller’s title.

The BlindBoxes example is a true blind box rather than a window box: the character is concealed until the package is opened. It is also one single box, not a complete set or a three-pack. Walmart’s surviving product record independently describes the Mattel Netherrack product as a one-figure mystery pack and identifies Mattel product number CJH36-999C.

The characters pictured for Series 3

The rear “Discover the World!” panel pictures six figures:

  • Steve with diamond armor
  • Squid
  • Ghast
  • Mooshroom
  • Wither Skeleton
  • Zombie in Flames

A second “Craft Your Collection!” panel expands the pictured Series 3 family with Blaze, Zombie with iron armor, Steve with minecart, Alex, Cave Spider, and Skeleton Horse. This mixture is more varied than the Netherrack name alone suggests. Nether-associated creatures such as Blaze, Ghast, and Wither Skeleton sit beside Overworld animals, players, and equipment-based variants. Mojang’s own background on netherrack explains the package theme: netherrack is the Nether’s abundant red block, and fire lit on it burns indefinitely.

What “only available in 1-packs” actually means

The package marks four pictured designs with an asterisk: Zombie with iron armor, Steve with minecart, Cave Spider, and Skeleton Horse. The matching note says they are “Only available in 1-packs.” That is a format distinction, not printed odds. It tells collectors those four were assigned to the single-box assortment instead of a multipack, but the packaging does not state that any one of them is short-packed or give pull ratios.

For that reason, it would be inaccurate to promote one as an official manufacturer Chase—or even as a collector-described chaser based on this box alone. A sealed single pack offers a chance at one of the eligible designs, but there is no guarantee of a particular character. The pictured exclusivity does make the four asterisked figures useful checklist targets for anyone comparing loose figures with multipack contents.

Buying an older sealed example

Box condition matters if the package itself is part of the collection. The photographed example shows an intact upright box with modest shelf wear: slight bowing and creasing around the top flap, plus light rubbing at edges and corners. Those signs are normal for small cardboard blind boxes of this age, but collectors seeking a sealed display piece should inspect the top and bottom flap seams, crushed corners, punctures, and any added tape. A closed flap is not automatically proof of a factory seal.

Collectors who intend to open the box can focus instead on panel completeness and series identification. Save the carton after opening: its two character panels are a compact checklist, and the red Netherrack design distinguishes Series 3 from neighboring Minecraft mini-figure assortments. For a loose figure, compare the exact pose and accessories—diamond armor, minecart, flames, or iron armor matter here because several entries are character variants rather than simply “Steve” or “Zombie.”
